Changes Coming to Marysville
Given the continued increase in population density and highway traffic, improvements have been, and continue to be made to enhance traffic flow efficiency & safety. Over the past several years, the Tulalip Tribes constructed roundabouts at 116th Street NE. The interchange improvement addressed capacity needs, congestion relief, and safety improvements for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
The next project scheduled to happen will involve two additional sets of roundabouts, one along the I-5 / 4th Street Interchange, and another along with the I-5 / 88th Street Interchange, as these two locations experience some of the heaviest amounts of congestion, wait times, and potential safety hazards.
Oftentimes, traffic in these congested areas gets so backed up, there become off-ramp backups that can extend back onto the I-5 mainline lanes of traffic. This blockage impacts local residents, commuters, visitors, transit, emergency vehicles, and commerce shipments.
Benefits of Roundabouts
- Traffic delays are reduced by 20-70%. This decreases travel time, idle time, and as an added benefit, emissions.
- Overall collisions are reduced by nearly 40%.
- Collisions are far less dangerous when they do happen. Injury collisions are reduced by 75%. Fatal collisions are reduced by 90%. Pedestrian collisions are reduced by 40%.
- Roundabouts are less expensive to maintain.
- Roundabouts don't go out during a power outage.
